Why not a Lexan windshield?

Lexan windshield at Summit.

Percy's Speedglass.

Lighter and no cracks. The main draw back has always been how easy it scratches. This product seems to address this.

Any thoughts?

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Lexan is fine for race cars but would not be practicle for every day driving. Yes it scratches, can yellow with ultra violet rays and needs polishing repeatedly to give a constant clear view. It is used in aircraft canopies and the ground crews have to stay on them to keep them in shape. Check out any aircraft museum and see what they look like without maintenance.

As far as cracks go, we work with Lexan in sheets from a few square inches to 16 square feet and 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch. It will check under heat and UV rays as well as start to crack at the edges if put under any kind of stress. It is strong as we tested 1/2 inch by shooting at it with a 45 from 30 feet. It did not go all the way through the Lexan.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Lexan windshield is ordered. Percy's has some blems for 60% off. I didn't want take a chance without being able to see it. I bought the "overstock" for 20% off.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Jim, I was just going to say that Bob Gassie knows where to get it. He and Ed Kamptner bought some sheets because of the glass breaking on the cobras. Tom Jones mentioned that there is a place in Tampa that has it as well. But since you already bought some, I don't guess that matters.

By the way, I am picking up my car this weekend and the windshield is cracked. I'm just going to put a lexan piece in it. Oh, the lexan that Gassie got already has "the coating" on it. Supposed to help with scratches...

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Percy's windshields are molded just like the original glass.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Why do that when you can make it so much harder on yourself? Looks like I'm calling Percy's, screw Gassie.

Jim, which thickness did you go with? I've got no idea.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

3/16 is what they recommended.

They are not cheap. Shipping was $80. 3 regular windshields and you have it paid for. The way these things eat windshields, it may not take long to break 3.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

How about cutting a hole in it for an air vent? A little breeze would have went a long way in making the car less hot.

Re: Why not a Lexan windshield?

Yikes. Tom Jones mentioned there is a GE Plastics place in Tampa. Looks like "speedglass" is GE lexan with the coating.

Hey David. I was thinking of trying to stop by and see Gary Jones' place if someone was going to be around there on Saturday - maybe pick up a spare set of wheels. I know he has some other stuff there as well. Bob Gassie was just up there looking at cars. I think I have your number in email and will give you a ring if I head that way.

Call Gary at his office to see if he has some wheels unmounted. I think Pomroy got the last of the unmounted rims. Gary's office number is 706-592-0060.Do this first think in the morning. If he is not there tell them what you want. If you are not able to pick them up on Sat. I can take them to Pomroy when I go to Sebring in two weeks or if you call me early on Friday I may be able to pick them up for you.

David.
