Question 3.8L V6 Stalls Windy Days When Coasting to Stop

I have a strange problem and hopefully someone can help. My 97 GrandPrix with the 3.8L V6 will stall occassionally. This has been happening for about 4 years and only occurs on windy days. Over the 4 year period has done on only about 10 different days and it only occurs when there is a pretty significant wind. The stall does not always occur but only happens when driving above 45 mph or so and then coasting to a stop. The RPM will drop below 900 and then stall. Shift to nuetral hit the key it fires up and no issue. I can prevent it by driving 2 footed and keeping the RPM above 1000. I won't let the wife drive the car because she wouldn't be able to deal with it. I would like to get it so she can drive it.

Thanks

Jim

Re: 3.8L V6 Stalls Windy Days When Coasting to Stop

Welcome to AF.

Possible correlation could be air intake related since the airbox gets it's air input from the back of the front driver's side headlight high pressure area. Have you tried cleaning the throttle body, IAC and MAF sensor? The idle is controlled by the PCM module through the idle air controller (IAC). Sounds like low IAC counts. You can remove it and clean the spring loaded pintle with throttle body spray cleaner and then lube with silicone spray. Also, clean the seat and orifice at the throttle body where the IAC mounts. On the MAF sensor remove it and clean the wire elements with MAF spray cleaner only. Also, a good time to install a new air filter. And check the connector to the IAT sensor.

See link below for throttle body component location.
