loss of oil

Wouldn't a light come on in the dashboard and/or the car start acting funny if the car was losing oil? I have a friend who damaged their oil pan and was losing oil but they didn't know it, cuz no lights came on. The engine stopped working, now they need a brand new engine. They owned a 2007 cobalt just like mine and I don't want it happening to me should I hit something.
Thanks

Re: loss of oil

There is no oil level indication, other than what you see with the dipstick. Low oil pressure will set a warning. Problem is, if you don't s/d the engine quickly, you're done for.
