Turn off airbag warning light?

I have a 2000 navigator and the airbag warning light flashes when I turn it on and then stays on, I am told it will not pass inspection if it is this way but don't want to pay to have an airbag fixed to get it turned off. Does anyone know the shortcut to turn the light off for long enough that it would pass inspection? Thanks for any help!

Re: Turn off airbag warning light?

Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system.
http://www.airbagsolutions.com/

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.
The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.

This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights. See if your car is listed here.

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool.

Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light.

Also, you may want to check out this site for information on researching your own vehicle for factory recalls!!!

So removing the bulb will only cause more frustration. Airbags are a restraint system required by law in vehicles manufactured after a certain date!

How would you feel selling or loaning the vehicle to a family with kids knowing that you hacked the safety restraints? And why would you own or purchase a high-end vehicle like a Navigator and want to bypass or hack one of Lincoln's main features which is SAFETY!

You paid for this free forum service? Hmmmmmmm.

Re: Turn off airbag warning light?

No, I meant that I paid for the website that he suggested in his post. I was only trying to have the light off so it would pass my states inspection, I realize safety equipment is important and WANT it to work. I only paid 6000 for this vehicle recently and am not rich by any means, just got a good deal on it. The point was to buy time until I had money to fix it and still be able to drive my car legally. Hope that clears things up?

Re: Turn off airbag warning light?

I wont matter if you remove the lamp or chime or remove the SRS or RCM modules..

Any state inspection not on the take will connect a scanner that WILL show those system faults even when you remove visibility; sorry.

Your only option is to repair the faults or find an inspector on the take.
Most of us would agree the repair is in your best interest, although some would argue the effectiveness of Airbags. Federal and local laws are on the side of repair as well.

Most auto parts houses will connect a scanner and give you a printout of the fault codes as a method of securing future business.. makes good business sense if you ask me. Some of us have our own scanners.

Another way to read fault codes (in some cases) is to 'read' how the vehicle is communicating with you in lamp flashes and audible tones. I'll post some basic references from your 2000 Ford Factory Service Manual just below all this, you can see for yourself why dealers charge $600 + for diagnosis.

You can have a CD (ISO) copy of your FSM from my webpage, free.. if you'd like to pursue this problem to the end. I think with the manual in hand you'll be able to solve this issue yourself with very little, or zero cost.

Many times this is the fault of a steering wheel Clockspring, some were solved by re-connecting a plug that came loose.. etc.

Here's some basic diagnostic routines from your FSM:

Re: Turn off airbag warning light?

Have you ever saw an air bag go off in someones face?

I would rather go in the ring with Mike tyson!

At least you can take a dive, befor he bites you.

I really like the saftey belts and ABS,but Air bags can kill too!

Tip the inspector,it's amazing what they over look!

Theres more Model T's registered today than what Henery Ford produced, because of KIT CARS and replicas.

They don't have air bags!

CAUTION - Don't ever let anyone barrow your car! ,if they are a friend give them a lift.

Re: Turn off airbag warning light?

In case of front end accident, you don't want to replace both air bags, when
there's no passenger!

How much do they cost? $500-$1000 per bag.

I think some fat ass broke the sensor in passenger seat.

Did someone fart or spill a drink?

Put a X,or I mean a crash dummy in passenger seat, that way you can drive in motor pool lane.

You might be able to trick the sensor to leave the air bag on all of the time.
