1999 suburban interior light issues

I bought a 1999 suburban used and am having a few issues with it. Soon after I got it home when you drive it the interior lights started flickering and when the keys were pulled they would stay on and drain the battery down. Now they don't flicker but they stay on. The only way to get them off is to use the dome overide button. When they were flickering you could hear a relay chattering in the dash. Is there a relay specifically for the interior lights or does the 1999 classic suburban have a BCM (body control module) light the new body style 1999 trucks. I checked all the door switches and they all seem to be ok.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: 1999 suburban interior light issues

Your '99 Sub (OBS) does not have a BCM. It does have an Interior Light Control Module located under the center of the I/P which is probably where the relay noise is coming from.

Other components are: Light sw, door sw's, Remote Keyless entry and wiring.

Cheers and Good Luck.

Re: 1999 suburban interior light issues

I saw this a year ago or so on a '99 Tahoe- it's the LCM (light control module) as mentioned above-- sit down when you price it! Or use a salvage yard- good luck trying to get the salvage yard to tell you if they have it over the phone-- it is not normally catalogued....

Re: 1999 suburban interior light issues

Personally, I just use the dome override switch and leave it since that's really the least of my worries. Of course, you need to be careful with those back barn doors. My daughter's boyfriend left the door open just a tad the other day. Just enough to keep the lights on I guess and I came out to a dead battery on Monday morning. It was 4 yrs old though and wouldn't take a charge, so another $120 had to be shelled out. That's after spending $2,800 two weeks ago on rebuilding the transfer case and purchasing new tires (uneven tire wear blew the case).

Anyway, enough my b-ing. Have fun with your new/used Burb.

Re: 1999 suburban interior light issues

Picked up a new lcm from the dealer today. $28 dollars and change. Now I need to find out where it goes. I was up under the dash just now and couldn't find the rascal to save my life. Any more insight to where its located. 777stickman, under the I/P? Instrument panel? Center. I'll take another look but I may not have the right component as I didn't see anything like I purchased.

Thanks,

Chris

Tore the dash apart again. Couldn't find it. I'll head to the library and look through the component location book.

It is right above the hump-- maybe this will help- it is object #2 in the below photo: to be sure you have the right module- it is a five wire module gray, orange, white, pink, black- this should help you find the right wiring harness.....

I/P=Instrument Panel. Look for 5 wires: Gray, White, Orange, Pink & Black.

Re: 1999 suburban interior light issues

I was having this same issue. I replaced the front door switches and it cured the problem. Do the switches first. I got mine at the dealer for $10 each. It is an easy fix. You pull the switches from the outside and they will come apart. Then reach under the dash and locate the connector side and unconnect and remove the inside part of the old switch. Feed the connector back through the hole and connect to the new switch. Push the switch back into the hole.
Note: on the passanger side, you will need to remove the glove box. Just pull the hold strap from the left side of the glove box toward you and slip it out of the anchor point. The glove box will now drop out. You may have to flex the right side of the glove box to clear the opening.
Hope this helps someone.

If you mean "how to check the module for good or bad", then there is no procedure in the service manual for that. It would take a schematic of the C/B and considerable skills to do that. The LCM is called a "non-serviceable replacement unit". This means that after you have gone thru 23 steps of checking for power, grounds, wiring, etc, etc, then you replace the module and hope for the best.
