91 GT bent axel

One of my axels got bent and I want to install a used one. I pulled the brake drum off and the rear dif cover off. Do I pry those S clips out of both sides? Is that what holds the axels in? Will all those little gears fall out when the clips come out? thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: 91 GT bent axel

no you dont take those s clips out. theres a small bolt on the pumpkin its a 8mil or 10mil i think. you take that off and pull out that pin thats its bolted to. then push in the axle ur going to replace and your going to take off the c-clip not s-clip. the c-clip is on the axle in the end inside. take that off and the axle comes right off.

Thanks, I just stopped at the library and they had a manual that said the same thing. I'll give it a try and post my results.

Re: 91 GT bent axel

The axel came right out just like you said. I pulled the seal out and went to the parts store to get a new seal, brake parts, and have the drums turned. The counter person noticed right away the drum was bent just sitting on the counter. He checked the other one and it was slightly bent also. I ordered two new drums and headed home and checked the axel by rolling it on the floor. It seem to roll smooth and in a pretty good circle. I put the new seal in and axel went right back in. Tomorrow I'll put the new drums on and check it again to see if there is any wobble.
