New Problem

Ok guys, synopsis..1995 2.2l 185,000 changed plugs and wires..,one of the wires had broken off and was stuck on the plug, car is running strong..however when i just barely give it gas it acts as though it wants to stall..no other time does it do this..but if i just touch the accelerator to go less than 10 it starts jerking.

Work done on car to date:

Replaced: Head Gasket, Heater Core, PCV Valve and fuel injectors (3)

I used some fuel system cleaner and I'm wondering if this stuff has somehow clogged up the fuel filter..

Can anyone give me symptoms to when the fuel filter is clogged or when the IAC is not functioning properly..I want my baby to run right and I know that ya'll have the no how to help a chic out

Talking Re: New Problem

Well...........
1. If the car runs strong above idle > 2000rpm...then more than likely it is not the fuel filter. Although it should be change every 25K miles. Some are a real pain to get off !! I have broken at least 5 of them.
2. Is the CEL light on ???
3. You can guess all day and hope to find the problem. But the first thing a shop will do is scan for codes. Some 95's came with a OBDII connector, and you can actually scan it as a 96. My son has a 95 Pont.FB and I scan it all the time.
4. Have the plugs been changed recently ??? Maybe the plug with the bad wire is now fouled...this is a cheap fix. 4 plugs = 8 buck.
5. If you reallly want to be a DIYS wrench....spend $20.00 bucks and buy a manual for that car.
6. Lastly....go to AutoZone.com...they have a great repair/how to section for that car. I use it all the time.

If all else fails.......go buy a 12 pack, the car won't feel better...but you will.

Wink Re: New Problem

Opps my bad....I see you did state that the plugs/wires were changed.

But this can create a new problem...ARE U Sure....the wiring is correct ???
Double check and then check again. The coil packs on that car are hard to see from the top and bottom.

JzJz in SC ......and the Man from Down Under ....he finally went home.

Re: New Problem

I have heard of this prob. before and as I have understood it that no one has a cure for it . my new rebuild does the same thing but only when the motor is first started up cold. you know that little touch of the gas pedal to get going and then I have to accel past that certain point.
Well I think that it would have some thing to do with the throttle position sensor or some related tb situation . I am still working on other stuff for the car so that is still on the bottom of my to do list. Oh and I have the 2.4l motor. I'l let you know if I happen to stumble accros the fix... ha ha!

Re: New Problem

ok another thought and it lead me here pg. 6-4 Haynes manual #22 Idle air control (IAC)- the iac valve controls the amount of air allowed to bypass the throttle plate when the throttle plate is at its (nearly closed )idle position. The iac valve is controled by the pcm. When the engine is placed under an addtitional load at idle (power steer, a/c, low speed manuvers) the engine can run roughly or even stumble and even stall. To prevent this from happening the pcm opens the iac valve to increase idle speed enough to over come extra load.
Imo : this is why you hear everyone talking about removing iac and make sure it is clean with all the dirty air let in and crap that builds up on it.
I guess I will go ahead and remove mine and see. Even though I had the Tb off and clean the hell out of it. I did not actually pull the IAC valve out and clean the valve its self thinking that spraying from all around would work during my rebuild so I will post back after while.I am also installing a ETC sensor at the same time (rad fan stuff)

I'm going to replace the IAC and see if that will fix the prob. If you do it first keep me posted and let me know how it turns out. @ Helmuth..if I liked beer I'd do that...I'm a Vodka type girl...LOL

Re: New Problem

usually you will get a code for bad iac ,it may just need a clean. I fixed my fan prob but in the process heated car up and I did have the same prob. (stalled even died )this time on cold take off earlier. I hate doing two things at once trying to cure probs no time to explain see sig waiting on car to cool off before I try again> at cold take off and I did clean iac to much tb cleaner I think bad results

Re: New Problem

I took out the old IAC and it wasn't the 1.10 calibration that it was supposed to be, don't think I can pull it out.. I put in the new one and it did some hesitation not as bad and this morning none at all..so maybe that did the trick.

I do have the CEL on, but when I took it to Autozone they can't get the computers to communicate so go figure..this light has been off and on for months now.. will keep ya'll posted...

Weathers going to be about 82 today...yipee

OK...good, you installed a "used clean" IAC and the car is running better..sound the a winner to me !!! I will drink to that !!..hic, hic

Just wondering about the OBD connector in your car. I know that GM install the OBD II connectors on some OBD 1 systems in 1995. The 95 Firebird my son has....has a OBD II connector under the dash.

So when I use my AutoXray 2000 Scanner, I used the OBD II connector to the meter and configure the scanner as a 96 instead of a 95 and it works !!!!

Good Luck,
JzJzz .....and the Man From Down Under !! Cheers ! Fosters Beer Rules....
