Red cars

Does owning a red car make your insurance cost more? I have been told not to buy a red car because the insurance rates are higher. I just wonder if this is true.

I don't believe it does. I asked that question many years ago to my insurance agent and he said it doesn't. Many times, insurance companies don't know the color of your vehicle, especially if you have it repainted sometime during your ownership of it.

I'd never heard that for insurance... some people think you are more likely to get a ticket in a red car which could lead to higher insurance. I do no believe that is true either. I had a red car for about 2 years and only got one ticket while driving that and I was doing 90 in a 55 zone. Not exactly the car's fault. I've had a red truck since 2001 and never been pulled over in it for a moving violation.

That's an urban legend. Insurance don't even know what color your car is.

Some insurance companies do though. Some insurance companies, including mine take a photograph of the vehicle for their records, when you take out a policy on it.

I went from a red Ford F-250 4x4 to a grey Chevy half ton 4x4 and my insurance actually went up! ($6 a month, but still....) I have heard they also base your rate on parts availability, should you get in an accident. That could explain the minor differences...
