Red back lighting on odometer

Good day to all.
Went on a road trip, just got back. On the way, about 300k into the trip, the back lighting on the odometer turned red. Pulled into a diner for a bite to eat. Came out, started the car, and the back light was normal, but it changed red again in a half hour or so....
It reset itself every time, and did not effect the car any, eg., temp and oil gauges stayed normal.
This is a new one for me. Is this a diagnostic nag or something? I haven't seen the same problem listed anywhere yet. Any ideas what this is?
Thanks
Shawn

Yeah, just weird. Didn't seem to change the way the car was running. Just weird
