Sunroof opening?

'98 G/A GT

My car has a sunroof/vent/moonroof/whateverit'scalled. I replaced the switch today since I broke the old one taking it out to test the switch. So I put the new switch in, and the sunroof works about how it did before (except now it responds all the time, the old switch must have been intermittently bad). The first time you press the open button, it opens about 1/4" and then stops. It doesn't matter how long you hold the switch, it opens 1/4" and stops. Pressing it again will open about 1", won't go further if holding the button. Pressing it again will open it about 2".

My questions:
1) Should it open in increments like that? It doesn't seem like it should, but it stops in the same spots (or VERY close) every time.
2) Is that as far as they open? I thought I saw it open far enough that I could see light through the front part while it was closing, but it may have been a reflection.
3) When it closes, is there a slip mechanism or something that would sound like a cordless electric impact!?

I have a feeling I'll be sealing the glass shut while it still works, but thought I'd see what they're supposed to do first. Anything's possible ever since engineers went module-crazy.

Thanks for any input

Re: Sunroof opening?

I dont quiet remember exatly how this models roof works but it sounds like it just might need some lubrication on the tracks.
Pretty sure thier the same mech as the 99+.
They use a cable system , pretty much a PITA to work on , usualy just replace the whole unit if its malfunctioning.
Not much you can repair when they die, kinda like the power window system with the motor/cable.

You have pics and a manual available ??

Re: Sunroof opening?

I have some pics, whatever is on ShopKey... I put the switch in after work on Friday and didn't feel like going back inside when it didn't fix it, and I forgot all about it til I read this post .

It's not a lubrication issue... that was the first thing I tried (I probably should have said I tried it).

I now think it's in the module. It started opening intermittently, but still closes every time. I'm going to try puting 12v to the motor and see if it goes and then rig up a couple switches if it does. If not, RTV sealant time.

Re: Sunroof opening?

Sounds like you have a good plan together.

My Se's sunroof works well and the gasket doesnt leak.
But my GT's gasket leaks, and my drains were cracked allowing water to leak down the pillars onto the fuse boxs and blew by BCM twice.
I fixed the drains but the gasket still leaks, I tried adjusting it but it didnt help, so I RTV it shut. I never use it anyway, I hate the sun cooking my brain. lol

Good Luck

Re: Sunroof opening?

Check the motor as well. When I had a bad window motor the window went down without a problem, but would only go up an inch or two at a time. Kinda sucked in the rain.
