I have looked thru my books and it is not real clean at what mileage do you replace the chain. Ya I know it say to check the freeplay or sag. To my knowledge it has never been replaced. The car now has 180K....
Question is: Am i driving on borrowed time ??? Do I replace both gears and chain ?? What is the best brand ?? Any help is greatly appreciated. JJ |

Re: Timing Chain Replacement V6 3.8 FB
off hand i would do it, i dont know the 3.8s to well but @ almost 200k i would change the gears and any tentioners but i dont think their like the old 3.8s with the nylon cam gear that comes apart so u might be safe to keep driveing got a 78 chevy pick up with 500k never had the chain replaced or any thing else for that matter

Re: Timing Chain Replacement V6 3.8 FB
Hey...thanks for the reply. I also got a 76 chev blazer...I changed out the chain and gears years ago. It has a original " plastic/metal" gear that was almost gone. I know it was starting to go when I found plastic pieces in the oil pan. I hope GM got smart and stopped using them. I am going to replace the chain and gears on my 95FB, better safe and sorry.
Thanks again...JJ |
