playing mp3's

I just bought a 2002 avalon and was told by the guy I bought it from it will play mp3 cd's. I tried a couple of cd with mps files on it but it shows up on display like its reading it but no sound. It has ad6900 on the face plate of the radio/cdplayer. does anyone know if it should play mp3's? Thanks in advance
