Sounds when turning.

I have a 99 Eddie Bauer Expedition and I hear and feel a rumbling sound when turning. Usually happens when its warmed up and have driven a little. When cold nothing. Also noticed the outside of the front tires are showing cupping wear. Any ideas on what it might be??

Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from? What side of the car, engine, etc? The outside wearing more than the inside of the wheel could be a bad alignment.

I'll try and be more detailed. From a standing stop and going straight and appling gas, no sounds are heard. From a standing stop turning in either direction and appling gas, a shuttering rumbling sound can be heard from the front end and unable to determine which side. Letting the Expedition roll before appling gas while turning, no sound is heard. The tires have wear on the outside edge and have noticed all four wheels have the same wear. Not sure if previous owner rotated tires. This is an Eddie Bauer Expedition with Awd. From what I have been reading this sounds like normal for the Awd's as the computer thinks it is slipping and engages the 4x4. Still any help would be welcome.

Anybody know the answer to this as my cousin's 1998 Expedition is doing the same thing. Sounds like a tranny or transaxle..???

could possibly be cv joints or tie rod or even a stuck brake caliper. Most front end shop / brake shops will give you a "free" estimate" . They will give you a detailed explanation of what is wrong. I use them everytime I need to get underneath the car or if I suspect brake or front end work needs to be done. They take off all the wheels, inspect the brakes and front end components, all for free, and although theses shops have a tendancy to over repair (fix stuff that doesn't need fixin), ask them to show you the worn part etc. so you can confirm they are not trying to fleece you and you'll know where and what the problem is. Don't be fooled when they say "this is serious, I wouldn't drive this car etc". Tell them you'll have to think about such a costly repair and then go straight to Auto Zone, pick up the parts and DIY.

I'm having the exact same problem in my 03 expedition. Here's whats happening. It feels as though the rumble is in the front end, in fact it is in the rear end. It is your rear differential grinding. Have yourself or a family member sit in the second or third row as you come to a complete stop and make your turn as usual. You will feel the vibration ( chatter ) under your rear end. Ford is well aware of the problem but has done no recalls to fix it. You can google search " 2003 ford expedition differential problems " and many forums will come up on this subject. Today I replaced my differential fluid with Mobil 1 full synthetic differential fluid and a limited slip differential additive you can get at your local auto parts store. Many people in the above mentioned forums have done this and cured the problem. I will update if this works for me. Or you can take it to Ford and they'll be happy to replace the cluches in the differential for upwards of $1000. Hope this gives you a little help.

I also have a 2003 expedition and have the vibration coming from the rear end when I am making a turn from a stop. Did the synthetic fluid and additive help?
