K&N And Performance Mods

I was just wondering if they make one of those K&N intake kits for Taurus's? I think that that would be worth the buy if they made one. Also does a K&N Filter make that much of a difference?

I am looking for little performance mods to put on my little 93 Taurus GL. I'm not very experienced with motors but I can take things apart good enough to install some. So what are some cheap things that I can put on it that will give it a little more power. I am putting new exhaust on already. I am looking for more power but I also dont want my gas mileage to go down. Up if its possible. So any suggestions. I usually look on ebay so if anyone sees anything there let me know. Thanks for any help.

Re: K&N And Performance Mods

K&N filter breaths better. You can also make modifications to your current air box and use the K&N filter for your current air box. What you need to do is drill some holes in the air box where they can't suck up any road splash. This lets more air into the filter and it will also be cooler air. Total setup should produce 5 - 7 hp increase.

Re: K&N And Performance Mods

How much improvement in hp will you get if you just put the holes in the box still using the oem type filter? And how much area do you need at least to add to make a difference and what size should the holes be? For example, if you need 6 sq. inches added, you could do that with 8 one inch diameter holes.
Thanks

Re: K&N And Performance Mods

You aren't going to add 5-7 HP to any taurus by drilling holes in the air box.

What you will do is start pulling hot air in from the engine compartment.
The taurus pulls air from outside the engine compartment in its stock form.

Dropping a K&N Panel filter isn't a bad idea if you are going to have the car for a while because you can clean it rather than replacing it.

Re: K&N And Performance Mods

Just be careful when cleaning the filter and re-oilling. If you over oil, it will coat the MAF sensor and cause a decrease in performance and fuel economy (not that the K&N will really yield much performance increase). I use K&N filters, but for the reason Mike stated, filter longevity. I've never noticed an increase in performance. I also make a habit of cleaning my MAF sensors as part of routine maintenance.
