weak fuel pump?

my 94' metro 1.0 has been acting up for sometime now. symptom is complete engine bog under acceleration. it is an auto and if i drive like a manual shifting through the gears to keep a high engine idle it drove ok. when i got it to hiway speeds 55mph+ it drove pefect on flats but up hills it starts to struggle. if i pump the crap out of the gas pedal it seems to help its struggle. this has been going on for awhile and it is now not even driveable. when i start it up it starts and idles fine, but once i put it in gear and start to accelerate, right back to the same old crap. i have replaced th o2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and fuel filter. still the same results. nothing has changed anything. i need help! thanks.

Re: weak fuel pump?

There are no diagnostic trouble codes right? Do a compression check. A burned valve would have the symptoms you describe.

Re: weak fuel pump?

the engine light flashes 51(EGR) but it has since i owned the car. the car has a 95 engine and the guy told me it has flashed like that since the engine replacement.i checked blowing through it and it seems clear of carbon build up, and the filter looks great. now for compression, 165lbs on 2 cylinders, 170 on one. i thought that to be pretty good. could all this be the EGR?

Re: weak fuel pump?

The EGR code 51 is most likely the passage from the EGR valve into the intake manifold being plugged. I think a stuck EGR valve would have different symptoms. If it was stuck closed, wouldn't matter. If it was stuck open, I think the car would stall at idle or at least idle terrible.

Have you checked the timing? Is the catalytic converter original?
