Re: ac / air pump delete

i've found cheap delete pulleys on ebay. the only way to get around using delete pulleys is to re-route with a shorter belt. best way I can think of is to mock it up with a piece of string or rope and then measure it to figure out what size belt you need.

Re: ac / air pump delete

i can understand deleting the A/C, ill probly be doing it to my 89 IROC seeing as i never use it. when the wheather is hot enough for A/C, ive got my T-tops off.

however, theres no reason to delete the air pump. it dosnt cost enough power to notice, (probly not even with a dyno) and does a critical job of cleaning emissions from the engine.

you must be using one of those magnetic fuel filters, a tornado air cleaner attachment, sonic spark plugs, and magic oil

just kidding, but yeah, i can believe it. but 90% of the cars on the road arent maintained well enough to pull it off. that equipment is there to account for those cars, that are not well maintained and still allow them to get decent emissions.

just out of curiosity, what is your setup on the camaro these days?

Re: ac / air pump delete

While we're on this subject, since my A/C doesn't work, would deleting it help me at all with economy/power? Since i'd just be deleting the A/C, couldn't i just order a belt for a the same motor but without A/C?

Re: ac / air pump delete

because the A/C pump is operated by a clutch, as long as its off, it really dosnt cost any hp. it really just acts like an idle pully. Its when the clutch engages and the engine starts turning the pump that it meets resistance and it costs power.

as for the issue of just getting the belt for a non-AC application, im not sure, but the A/C delete pully exists for a reason, so i would assume the belt is the same. just take a tape measure (cloth one, not the metal type) and run it around the pullys, making sure to move the tensioner into the position it would be in with a belt on it, and that measurement is the length of belt youll need.

Re: ac / air pump delete

why on earth would you go from TPI to carb????

hell, if you dont want it, feel free to mail it to me, ill take the whole setup off your hands

I know, while your at it, pull the overdrive tranny and swap in a 2 speed powerglide, and throw a set of 4.56 gears in the back, why not take all the modern technology that improves power, driveability, and operation of the car, and put stuff on from the 50's and 60's........

i realize im coming across as quite a dick, but as a tree hugger, it always bugs me when people buy modern cars, and de-evolve them to neandertal status. if you want a carb'd car, just buy one from the 50's, 60's or 70's.

technology isnt bad. neither are emissions equipment. it has been proven time and time again, in regards to street cars, (not purpose built drag cars) carbs just cant even compete with fuel injection. especially in the fuel mileage department, which is somewhat important in these days of rising fuel prices.

ok, rant over, ill put my soapbox back in the closet now.

Re: ac / air pump delete

i guess it just confuses me. I mean dont get me wrong, my uncle had a 69 camaro with a 500cid bowtie block fueled by a dominator, my first car had a q-jet, and i love all muscle cars. But i guess if was gonna build a mostly strip used carbed car, i would find an old chevy II. its lighter than a camaro, dosnt have all the electronics to remove and deal with, already has a clean engine bay, has ton's of aftermarket support, and is a cool a$$ ride.

it just seems like if youre looking for something that will run at the strip, and want it carbed, getting a new car and converting it back down seems like a helluva lot more work to me than starting with something already carbed. I personally think it would be really bad a$$ to have a roots blown 427cid sbc with dual 750 q-jets mounted up top in say, an old chevy II or a 65 chevelle. but you wont see me doing that to my IROC im actually goin the other way, superram intake on a 302cid sbc. but like i said, thats just me.

in all seriousness though.... what ya doin with the old TPI setup?
