98 sho where is the epc (electronic pressure control soleniod) on the ax4n transmission? could that be giving me goofy shifts?

Re: epc ax4n position?

At this rate, we're going to have a real difficult time converting you to Fords, hunh?

The EPC appears to be integrated into the transaxle solenoid group. There is a side cover for the solenoids, and the EPC is under that cover. The EPC is the solenoid on the upper left when looking at the area with the cover removed. It has an electrical connector to it and is held in with 3 bolts.

The Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor is also in this area and it is one of the inputs to the transmission control module that is used to adjust EPC line pressure. You should probably replace the TFT while you're in there if you go that route.

Does your ABS work? The SHO uses the wheel speed sensors for the ABS as the "vehicle" speed sensor. If the wheel speed sensors are not accurate, that could cause shifting issues. Does the ABS light come on during the bulb test?

Re: epc ax4n position?

Now I need to try to remember if that is one of the bulbs that is tested as part of the bulb test. You don't happen to have an owner's manual for your car, do you?

You may want to check the manual if you do for the bulb test listing. Also, see which fuse location is for the ABS. Or, just find a gravel or sandy road and see if the ABS works. Since the cruise also uses the ABS wheel speed, if the ABS is out, that could effect both the cruise as well as your shifting.

Re: epc ax4n position?

this is off the 98 owners manual i found online

Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (If equipped)
Momentarily illuminates
when the ignition is
turned on and the
engine is off. If the
light does not illuminate momentarily at start up,
remains on or continues to flash, the ABS needs to
be serviced. With the ABS light on, the anti-lock
brake system is disabled and normal braking is still
effective unless the brake warning light also remains
illuminated with parking brake released.

Re: epc ax4n position?

I think I'd focus on fixing your apparent ABS issue before tacking the EPC solenoid. Not sure which will be a cheaper fix at this point.

Re: epc ax4n position?

Rod, he's left-handed from all those GMs and trying to work right-handed on a Ford. And if you know their emblems, he's square trying go in an oval. Need to knock a lot off those corners. Nothing meant by it, 03impala9c1, I grew up in a family that owned and worked for GM for several generations , and I have yet to own a GM product, just their stock that's about to tank.
I too looked at my OM for my 95 and for what it's worth, the abs light does the same as you said, and after you start your car and for the first time you reach 14 mph, 22kmph, the abs pump should come on for 1/2 second as another test. Supposedly it is faintly audible. Can't say I've heard mine. Makes me want to check for it now. This may not occur if the initial keon abs test doesn't result with the light on and then off. I also thought with the right scanner, codes could be read if any, and the abs pump can be tested. I also know if the light remains on, you WON'T have any abs, just regular brakes. Found that out with the infamous Windstar overly sensitive low brake fluid level sensor. It needs to be AT MAX for the lights to go off and abs to work. Picky Ford engineers. The abs bulb may be out or like, but with what else is going on, not sure it would be, but it would be a nice surprise, just a pain to get to.

Re: epc ax4n position?

Did you check the fuse for the ABS or see if the ABS will activate on a gravel or dirt road?

It looks like there's a 10-amp fuse in the instrument panel fuse panel for the ABS pump and a 30- and 40-amp fuse in the Engine Compartment Fuse Panel for the ABS system.

The ABS indicator in the instrument cluster is powered by a 5-amp fuse in the instrument cluster fuse panel and the ground is provided by the ABS module.

Re: epc ax4n position?

ok so after even FURTHER digging into this concern..., i found no wiring issues but have not tested any wires... I got a second opinion of a shop owner and said he has seen a lot of problems just like mine in taurus's being the TP sensor. I replaced it with the one from the old engine and it did not change anything. Ran a sweep on it and came out ok. took it down a gravel road and ABS WORKS. so i think the problem MAY be in the dash cluster itself. Maybe with the abs light not working (and i found out the check engine light does not work at all either) may be somehow be related and idk maybe if i make these work again it MAY solve my problems? He said he has seen some vehicles in which with the check engine light not working at all the vehicle has driveability issues... whats your opinions?

Re: epc ax4n position?

Well, it could be that the bulbs in the instrument cluster are burned out. That may get the lights coming on during bulb test. Or, there could be a problem with the printed flex cable for the instrument cluster. That's not all that uncommon either. Unfortunately, I'd be quite surprised if either of them would cause the cruise not to work or the tranny to shift funny.

You may want to try searching this forum for the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) or Digital TRS (DTRS). There have been some pretty odd electrical issues on Taurii due to the TRS since so many signals run through it. Maybe others have had similar symtoms to you that were fixed with a new TRS. I don't recall that being the case, buy my memory isn't that great either.
