Exclamation 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

Hi,

I just changed the valve cover gasket on my 91 Calais. When I changed the gasket, I had to remove the plate for the gas pedal and another part that has a vaccuum hose connected to it just to get to the last bolt on the valve cover. It has the 2.5 Tech 4 in it. Now when I start the car, it idles very rough and seems to be missing. A vaccuum hose did break and I replaced it, but didn't fix the problem. I have double checked to make sure that the plug wires are in place. She has a relatively new air filter and plugs. The car drives fine, just doesn't idle well at all. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated since I have no clue what would cause this to all of a sudden happen.

Keep looking for crossed wires or a major vacuum leak.

Re: 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

I just replaced the EGR valve thinking that was it and it isn't. I just bought new plug wires and am going to put them on tomorrow and see if that does it. She's spitting and sputtering more now, idling a little better; so I'm hoping the plug wires do it. Any suggestions on how to get to the end of the plug wires on the module? It's quite a tight fit and was wondering if anyone knew of an easier way to get to them.

Exclamation Re: 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

I've replaced the spark plugs and wires and it made a little difference. It is still spitting and sputtering. When you get the car up to about 65mph, it starts to buck. I'm not sure what else to do for her. I'm getting to the point to where I may have to get rid of the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked any of the electronic controlled parts?

I'm assuming your'es has a IAC (idle air control) sensor.

Also a TPS (throttle position sensor).

On my olds cutlass supreme, they are near the throttle body.

Just trying to give some idea's . Good luck.

Smile Re: 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

I'll check those out. I'm thinking it is going to be the TPS since it is right near where I had to put a wrench to get to the bolt for the EGR valve. I may have knocked the wires loose or killed it when I was moving the wrench. It looks relatively simple to replace and inexpensive. I'm out of town right now and will have a definite answer this weekend. I really don't want to give up on the car. It's a good little car.

Talking Re: 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

I have replaced the TPS and it made a world of difference. The only thing she is doing now is when you push on the gas and let off, she starts to stall and run like crap again. Would this be the IAC? I don't know much about what the IAC does and was wondering if any of you think this would be the new issue.

Thanks for all of the responses that I have gotten. This forum is a life and money saver!!!!!!

Re: 91 Calais 2.5 Idle Issue

Iac only controls idle speed. Symptoms could point to a bad fuel pump/low pressure issue.I'd stop throwing parts at it and try to find what is actually wrong.
