1998 escort 2.0 sohc timing

I have a 1998 Escort 2.0 SOHC. w/ 98000 miles. Recently while driving I started hearing a slapping noise and suspected it was the timing belt. I took the car home immediately. It was still running smoothly until I turned the ignition off. It then sputterd a little & shut down. When I tore into it there were about 10 teeth shredded off the belt. I ahve removed the belt & lined up the crank pulley with the mark.
I know where the marks are but I am not sure about the camshaft position. What is the best way to time it correctly?

Re: 1998 escort 2.0 sohc timing

The 2.0 is just like the 1.9 engine.

There is a timing mark near the center of the cam sprocket that will align with a mark on the head. The timing mark on the crank must be aligned with the mark on the water pump housing.

I believe this engine has the crank position sensor mounted on the back side, just below the oil filter. When aligned correctly, at TDC the 9th tooth from the gap in the harmonic balancer will be aligned with the crank sensor.

Rotate the engine a couple times by hand after everything is together to be sure nothing slips then put it all back together.
