oil leak... sorta
so i was driving my car a bit harder than usual yesterday at a local meet, and ive noticed the appearance of oil by my oil cap on the front valve cover. im trying to figure out wether its the cap or the valve cover gasket... a buddy of mine said the caps can leak under high boost and it needs a breather cap. any thoughts on this? thanks.

Re: oil leak... sorta
Replace the oil cap. They are cheap and can leak. However, if something were to leak oil on high boost it would most likely be the dipstick if everything else was good. That would be the easiest place for the oil to get out.

Re: oil leak... sorta
this is actually the second cap ive had... and my old motor did it too... also after last night sumthin was smokin too so im thinkin maybe it dripped on the manifold? i wasnt runin overly hot and my coolant n everything was in good shape. and i havent lost a noticible ammound of oil either. its in the exact same place on the dipstick that it was when i changed it last week. would oil type have any impact on this?

Re: oil leak... sorta
Shouldn't.
So does it seem to be leaking around where the head and the valve cover meet? Is that where the oil build up is? If you've replaced the cap and the oil build up is around the where the two meet then I guess it's a valve cover gasket. If it were leaking from the dip stick it would be blowing the dip stick out. And oil would be all over anything around it. |

Double up the gasket on the cap.

Re: oil leak... sorta
also, it seems that somw oil is getting through the bolts on the valve cover, under the spark plug cover, by the plugs. is this normal?

Re: oil leak... sorta
Sounds like you might be getting some blow-by. This is caused when pressure built up in the cylinders gets past the piston rings and starts to pressurize the engine. Check the function of your PCV valve and replace it if necessary. If you aren't leaking oil while driving the car out of boost, then most likely this is the case. Do a compression test and a leak down test to figure out exactly what's going on. People often mistake this as a leaking oil cap (which is common since the gasket hardens over the years), but if you have recently replaced it and it still leaks then you might have other issues (bad pcv valve or excessive blow-by). Get those items checked out and replace your valve cover gaskets soon. Most people go way too long without replacing them too. They aren't that bad to do while replacing your spark plugs (another item people don't do frequently enough).
