Fixed it!
I posted in the forum about the hard starting problem back in January

and was going to try the ignition switch removal-&-cleaning or replacing as soon as the weather starts getting warmer (it hasn't yet). Then the car started doing the intermitent stall-&-stumble during driving last month, in additon to the hard starting. It did this more and more often, and finally a couple of weeks ago turned on the check engine light and threw a code P0385 pointing at the crank position sensor. Picked up a sensor at the local GM dealer and put it in, now after more than a week, all the hard starting and stall-while-driving seemed to have been fixed and never came back. I guess I can save cleaning/replacing the ignition switch at least for now.
