99 Alero will start but dies right away

I have a 99 Alero GL. It will start but imediately cuts off. None of my gauges or dash lights are working either. My power windows, radio,and headlights are all working. I replaced the battery 1-2 months ago. Do you guys have any idea what the problem could be?

Will it stay running if you give it gas?

No it will not stay running even when I give it gas. By the way it is a 2.4 L.

Welcome to AF Shannonmm1127.

Make sure your battery terminals are clean and tight.
Check your battery voltage, should be at least 12.5-13.5 volts with the car off.

If that checks ok check your fuses, then I would try replacing the fuel fitler if that hasnt been changed in the last 10-20k miles.

Did you find out what was wrong with your alero? The exact same thing happened to mine 2 days ago. Dies right away and no indicators. My radio doesn't work either. It was towed to the garage, but they are stumped so far and it is the weekend.

You both should get your fuel pressure checked !

the fuel pressure for a 99-00 2.4L
w/EGR 41-47 psi
w/o EGR 52-58 psi

the V6 is 41-47 PSI

Also is your security light staying on or flashing ????

mine is a 2004 alero. i don't think i have ever noticed a security light. The lights come on normal when starting and all go off like they normally do, but the indictators do not work at all. when it first happened it finally started and i drove it home from work and it ran fine, but i didn't know how fast i was going because the indicators didn't work or radio. when i parked in the driveway it just starts and dies with no indicators, but the dash lights do work.

I still don't know what is wrong with mine. I had it towed to my mechanic on Friday. I'm still waiting to hear something from him.

I had this happen a week ago, got the battery replaced and it works.

It very interesting driving without a dash isn't it :P

The battery is what it sounds like to me, but you would think a shop would notice that right off.

Do either of you two(Shannonmm1127 & joanmcl) have a bunch of things hanging from your key chain ?????

I havent seen or heard of any 2004-05 Alero's having random stalling issues..... seen several 99-02's though.

Yeah this had confused me too when it was happening the other week.
I think it was monday and my battery was dead before I took off and so I jumped it and got around to where I had to go then i came out and went inside, came out 4 hours later to go somewhere else and the battery was dead again. So I hooked my jump pack up to it and it started for 1 second then died, started again and died. (Luckily the battery I had was still on warranty since I only got it 3 months earlier). So then I try jumping it from a friends car thinking maybe the jump pack isnt giving it enough juice, Same thing. So I get the car towed (57$) and get a ride to work, they run all of their tests and can't figure a thing out... They give me a call and I remind them that the battery was dead 2 days ago so they hook it up to the charger and go to test it and tada! They replace the battery and starts up as if nothing was wrong.
Could just be me but whenever I find a car that doesnt start the first things I check are battery, fuel, and spark plugs. Anyway I hope its as simple as a battery for you two!

NO START SOLUTION: 2000 Alero, 2.4L, turns over but doesn't start, security light turns on then off then after a few seconds light turn back on SOLID, SOLUTION: repaired corroded terminals on BCM (located on passengers side under the dashboard). Humidity from blower or other source leaked onto terminals and coroded them away. They symptoms actually started months ahead of time. First the door locks stoped working, then the door chimes and lights, finaly the car failed to start. It would turn and run for about a second and then die out. The security light would remain on solid. The 10 min reset doesn't work in this case.
