2001 Chrysler 3.5 engine noise

The car has a odd engine noise that occurs when the car is driven under a moderate load when the engine is less than operating tempature. It is not heard once the engine is warm. I originally sprayed some wd 40 on the timing belt cogs and it helped. The belt was changed soon after and noise went away. Now it has came back. Any ideas. Thanks.

Is the noise coming from that same timing belt area? I am guessing you have over 100,000 miles on the clock. Did you change out the water pump at the same time? How are your other two belts and tensioner? Is the noise
directly related to engine speed (as the engine rpm's increase, does the noise increase also?)?

Re: 2001 Chrysler 3.5 engine noise

I did the belt, water pump and tensioner pulley around 92000 when I replaced a cracked radiator. I used the wd40 to isolate and deglaze, what I thought, was the problem. The noise is kind of like a cracking/popping sound at an rpm around 1200, with a light load, and then goes away. It sounds like it is around the left engine head at the front of the engine. After replacing the belt the noise was gone. The car has 113000 miles on it now and has had that noise for approx 5000 miles. I suspect the cam gear might be glazed. Does that sound reasonable? Loven

The belt tensioner pulley bearing for the powersteering and alternator is junk. The pulley is cheap, you cannot get just the bearing, replace the whole pulley and you can get it at any parts store.Remove it from the car and spin it by hand.If you can hear any weird noises,it is junk.
