2000 malibu engine light

my check engine light is always on i have no idea why but i changed the radiator overflow tank because it was leeking then the cap broke so i put a new cap on and yet that one broke so i went to the dealer and got a cap from them the light went off for the first time then about 5 mins later it came back on i dont know why the cap is doing its job its not broke any help would be appreciated

i think autozone still reads check engine light codes for free with an obd-2 reader if you don't have one. that's where i'd start for the engine light.

the surge tank/cap may be unrelated to the check engine light even though light went out for 5 mins when replacing cap.

You really need to have those codes read before you can begin to diagnoze. Autozone still reads for free.

I'd give up with replacing the caps. I've busted a few.....it's a bad design and the bottle ID may be a bit small. I now unscrew the cap and pry the broken piece out of the neck with a screwdriver. Just don't pry it up by the O-ring.
