ecm?
on a 02 grand am 2.2 what is the thing plugged in on top of the engine above the spark plugs and can that go bad but still let the spark plugs spark just not at the right time or what is that the ecm

That is the ignition module and coil assembly not the ecm aka powertrain control module (PCM).
