Is NASA guilty of a cover up?
On February 1, 2003, at approximately 8:00 a.m., CST, The space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry and crashed. Pieces have been found over a wide area of Texas, Louisiana, and possibly other states. Did NASA know the shuttle had a high risk of crashing due to damage on the left wing? Are they covering it up? Could of they done more, so this never would have happened? What do you think? To the shuttle crew Rest In Peace and I only wish the best for the crews families. God Bless.

is there any sort of evidence that could substantiate that claim or is that just completely made up?
I would think it was space debris myself but then again you'd think they'd rebuild the shuttles entirely every year i mean the damn thing was 25 years old and it rans into space how many times? its not like driving your car. If something like a door fell off your car it wouldn't explode (exaggeration) but with a space shuttle it suffers severe stresses on every launch i mean the force of gravity and the force of the thrust from engines must put a kind of compression force on the whole structure of the shuttle it can only run so many times before it starts to fail. I believe it was poor maintanence and the lack of knowledge of long term effects on the materials used to contruct the shuttles. Either that or its space debris. The amount of stuff lost in space in stuck in earths orbit thanks to Nasa and other satelite space programs is amazing I'm surprised that something more disaterous hasn't happened already like the total annihilation of a complete shuttle. France lost a Spy Satelite for this reason. |

The enquiries into this disaster will be extensive, the examination of the wreckage and the video footage will be painstaking. It is an insult to both NASA and the memory of the crew that there are people out there who have no skills in this field, and yet are prepared to point the finger this early in the investigation.
I't's far too early in the investigation to come up with half-assed conspiracy and cover-up theories.Wait for the official reports to come out,and study them carefully. You don't become versed in a subject by just grabbing a few sentences from the late-night news and trying to run them together into a scandal. |

All I am saying is that it has almost been a month since it happened and you dont hear anything about findings or how the investigation is going from NASA. I mean no disrespect, which you would of seen by the last sentances of my thread. All I want is other peoples opinons. I have just heard a lot of storys and I want to know if anyone else heard any. For example that even though some engineers where worried about the condition of the ship after having something hit the wing during take off, they never went to a higher authority to voice there concerns and that there where pics scheduled to be taken of the shuttle a day before it was going to land to see if there was damage but they were later canceled by NASA. I dont know if these storys are true or if they are false, but by know you think NASA would atleast know something. Remember that if people didnt ask questions the truth would never be found. So I am just asking what people think. It was a terrible event and I am very sad that it happened. But that dosnt mean it shouldnt be talked about.

Well I also believe there is no point speculating about this disaster yet. The investigation is far from over, think about how long it takes the FAA to study a plane crash, NASA will take a fair bit longer.
But even if NASA knew the shuttle was damaged, and may not make it back to earth. The only thing that they could do was try. The shuttles got no escape system, and it didn't have enough air left to wait up there. Plus not telling the population that the shuttle may disintigrate it a good idea. Otherwise you've have many more people under the flight path trying to watch it, & you could have ended up with more deaths, as they'd be more people for the wreckage to hit. But good luck to NASA, and hopefully they can find what the problem was, and correct it so this kind of disaster can never happen again. sarujin

well depends
they aren't really gonna cover it up i know if they release a report they will say exactly what happened but i know the video they found has to be fake it says the tape stops 4 minutes before it the accident i'd say they have the whole thing on tape and just aren't goin to show the whole thing to the public probably because within that tape is the answer to why it happened |

My answer is quite clear.NASA HAS NOT COMPLETED ITS INVESTIGATION YET.So how the hell can they be guilty of anything yet? |

I don't think that it would be a good idea to jump to any conclusions before the official enquiry is completed. The original question at the start of the thread was not stupid, but the way the thread is panning out is.Why can't you just accept that until a full and proper investigation is carried out, nobody, not even NASA, can say with any certainty what caused the shuttle to break up?We may never know what caused this disaster, but that doesn't automatically mean that there is any kind of cover-up.There's any number of half-witted conspiracy theorists out there who would like to pin the blame for this on somebody, anybody, without going through the established process of air accident investigation. There are no obvious causes for this tragedy.Give NASA credit for not jumping to conclusions before every possible cause has been considered. |

Sorry that our answers are not the debate that you were seeking to start, but there is little point in speculation. How can anyone reasonably argue that there has been a cover-up before NASA has even voiced their position? |
