shift problem?

I own a 98 Pontiac Grand Am SE. The problem is when i go from DRIVE to REVERSE it doesnt move, almost like its in neutral. when i go from REVERSE to DRIVE it shifts fine, to get reverse to work i just go from DRIVE to PARK to REVERSE and it always works.. what could be the problem?

Re: shift problem?

Welcome to AF.

Your shift linkage could be loose or damaged.
You should be able to see the top of the trans on the drivers side(under the hood), look and see if the cable on top of the trans has came loose.
Thier should be a device where some wires plug into thats the park neutral safty switch which the cable connects through/to.

If thats not loose then your trans could have other issues......

Good Luck and Happy Easter!
