Brake Light / Stop Light Switch

THIS IS AN INSTRUCTION:
I just got finished doing this job, (replacing the switch) and thought I would post some directions since it was so much fun.
  • All 3 Brake lights were out.
  • Bulbs were fine, fuse was fine.
  • All other lights working.
Part was a "Standard Brand, "SLS208"

I did not remove the lower dash panel, (too much of a pain in the ass)
Follow the brake pedal a couple of inches above the brake pad. (It may be hard for a bigger person to actually see underneath the dash panel, it's a tight fit even with the seat all the way back) Just to the right, you can feel the plastic housing attached to the bracket.

It also has the wiring harness clipped into the housing.

1. I removed the switch housing first by gently rotating it in the bracket.

2. It should be able to be pulled out with a little gentle persuasion. It is going through a square hole, so the plunger on the switch will like to hang up on it.

3. You will see the wiring harness going into the switch. You will need to take a small straight screwdriver and press the two clips in to free the harness from the switch. You might even need to wedge the flat edge of the screwdriver between the harness and switch to pry it free. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/ima...1&s=automotive

4. I found it easier to clip the new switch and harness together prior to putting the switch back in the bracket.

5. REMEMBER to find a way to press the brake pedal down before trying to put the switch back in the bracket.

6. Line up the square connection on the switch (there is a little tab that only allows you to to fit it one way) with the square connection of the bracket.

7. Push in, twist, and this should set.

8. The switch is activated when the plunger is allowed to extend all the way.

Re: Brake Light / Stop Light Switch

I have had to change that in my '00. Those are good instructions, but I want to add to it. The factory service manual tells you how to rig the new switch - Rig it as follows.

Pull the plunger all the way out to full extension. It will ratchet out to full extension.

Install the new switch into the bracket on the pedal.

Press on the brake pedal until the pedal stops (not the switch) using normal pressure like you would when driving, or using moderate hand pressure on the pedal.

Your switch is now rigged to your car.
