transmission ?

Hello. I have a 1993 olds cutlass s. 3.1L and 4 speed trans. My situation is the engagement of the transmision. When it is first put into gear in the morning, I can feel the car go into gear but it will not move. The way I get it to move is to rev the motor up and down for about a minute. Then it will drop into gear and go. It will be good until the next morning when I try to move it again. Is there a sensor that controls the trans or the torque converter? I have not been able to find anything out. I also get an engine code 36 ignition control 24X signal circuit error. Might these be related.

Re: transmission ?

A partially clogged filter can cause this, short of that the unit will need to be internally sealed or overhauled.

Re: transmission ?

What is ment by internally sealed? Can this be done without overhauling? can it be done while the filter is being changed? Thanks I appreciate the reply.

There is no drain plug on the transmission. So the transmission must be removed. I'm guessing it's best to replace the filter too.

Also I think I heared on here someone making a custom draining hole for their transmission, but that would require a good skilled mechanic.

Re: transmission ?

If the internal seals are bad this requires a basic overhaul, big job!

Re: transmission ?

Did you check the fluid level ?
If it's low, and cold it will slip a lot.

You can drop the trans pan and change the fluid & filter.

If thier is debrie in the trans pan, ie. metal pieces or plastic parts, your trans is probly toast.
Reving it will only make the problem worse!!

Good Luck

Re: transmission ?

Hello. I should have mentioned that the fluid level is normal. I will be changing the filter and fluid, also checking for anything in the pan.
Thanks for the insite. hopefully there will be no rebuilding. Thanks

Here is an update. The filter has been changed. There was nothing in the pan. just small stuff stuck to the magnet. The transmission is still the same. When put into gear is feels like it engaged. reving is the only way to get it to move. If reved in reverse half dozen times then put into park and wait one to two minutes, then put in into gear the trans drops into gear and the car goes like there is not a problem. sometimes it dropes into gear quite hard. now upon stating from a stop sign it will shudder if you try to accelerate to quickly. slow stady accleration will not shudder the trans. Thanks
