Lightbulb free exhaust mod?

Recenly, while driving to work I noticed my exhaust was sounding a little louder and deeper. When I got to work I saw that the tailpipe had separated from the muffler ( Dynomax 12 inch bullet) due to rust. The rest of the tailpipe and muffler are OK. Only the spot where they connected is rusted. I like the new sound and would like to leave it that way. There is a hanger a few inches before the muffler on the exhaust pipe. Other than taking the tailpipe off the 2 hangers that are holding it up, Is there anything I need to do? My truck is a 99 Silverado 4x4 ext. cab.
Thanks

Keep the exhaust fumes from getting into the cab would be high on my list.

Re: free exhaust mod?

As long as your not sitting in stopped traffic all the time for long periods of time i wouldnt really worry about exhaust fumes that much, im from a small redneck town and your not cool with your new truck unless you rip the muffler off as soon as you get your truck, and none of my freinds have had any effect from exhaust fumes. Oh wait that could be questionable to who you ask! JK

Re: free exhaust mod?

The pipe came off easy with a little WD-40. I have'nt noticed any fumes yet.
Thanks for the replies.

The underside of your box may start to rust quicker IMO. I think I`d rather pipe it to the outside of the box

Carbon Monozide is clear, tasteless and ordorless. Effects are often mistaken for the flu. Do you really want to take the chance?

Also do not forget that some of the effects are permanant... Look up chronic acute carbon monoxide poisoning and you will hook that baby back up real quick. It was a big problem in nascar a few years ago. Your truck may not sound as good but you will have more years to listen to it.

Re: free exhaust mod?

OK I'll look into it. Any idea on the cost of a pipe to exit in front of the passenger tire like the Gibson super truck exhaust? Or would a turndown work as well? Thanks for the help.

Re: free exhaust mod?

You want to have it exit from underneath the truck, either out the side or out the back. If looking like a redneck is what you want you could always do something like semi stacks out the top... (please do not condiser that a serious option) A local exhaust shop should be able to custom bend a piece of pipe for your application at a decent rate, shop around to find the best one.

Stacks would be an option, but if you want to save money, just use one, it should look fine! That's actually on the truck (and it's not even diesel!), I took the pic on my cell phone, and from my car so it's hard to tell.

If you like that sound, just get an exhaust shop to install an exhaust cutout in front of the muffler. As long as its back toward the bed, you won't have any problems with it. Then, if you need to quiet the truck back down, put the plate back on the cutout.

Summit sells a cable actuated exhaust valve. They're nice because if you drive past a cop you can just pull on the cable and you have an instant muffler. They're pricey, but IMO, well worth it. Plus there's no burning of the fingers taking the plate off if the exhaust if hot.

Yeah, I've been out of pocket for quite a while, but made my way back. Last time I went to the track was for the lsx shootout. Ran my mid 11s@118 then trans number 7 went out on me on the last pass. Purchased a TH350 for it, just haven't had time to get it in. I moved to another house, so its been hell finding time to get online as much as I used to. I'm back though, and expect great times out of the truck soon.
