Cool Thumping/Knocking

I have a thumping/knocking coming from the front drivers side. Tire is new. Control arm is new. Car is handling fine and running great other wise. New mechanic suggests damaged transaxel, but needs to tear car apart to confirm. Any input??

Re: Thumping/Knocking

I could suspect a bad strut, or the pivot assembly at the top of the strut, or a damaged anti-roll bar bushing or attachment. I would not expect it to be a transxle problem.
Does it happen only now and then, or is it regular, periodic? Does it happen only on bumps, only while accelerating, and at what speeds?
If you jack up the curbside of the car, so the wheel is off the ground - then start the car and put it in gear; does the car make the sound. Dont try to spin the wheel too fast. Remeber that with one wheel spinning, the speedometer showing 40 mph will mean the tire is spinning as if it were going 80 mph.
