ring and pinion (i know i posted this before)

Hey, so im back...wanting mroe power!

i was afraid of messing w. the rear end a while back, but after doing a clutch change with the trans out, i figure im ready.

sorry Formula LT1, i never got around to doing all the things you suggested! i was looking for the thread i started to get all the info you gave me, but i couldnt find it!! it dissapeared or idk wtf happened.. so i was wondering if someone remembered/ can tell me again what to do..

if you all forgot me..

1997 SS, M6, stock rear end (i think), i wanted info for:
1) the price (money i should save up)
2) what i should go for...4.11/3.73 (the speed @ RPMS)
3) what to look out for:?

so far i got the things scoped out..its gonna cost me 200 for the gears from richmond/motive. i DO have a zexel torsen diff, so i know im gonna need an adapter if i go w. the 4.11's. i do remember that from what Formula was telling me..

anyone got ideas?suggestions? my cruising speed normally oin the freeway is below 80..in hawaii, anything 35 over the posted limit = grounds for court, prison, license suspension. so..yeah...highest speed limit posted around here is 65..max you can hit is 100 before youre considered a felon.

which sucks, but hey. whatcha gonna do,right? i just wanted to get some more power out fo the car...while taking it easy on the engine. (since im always between gears at 60/55ish) how fast will my engine be spinning @ 60mph? if i got 4.11? 3.73?

well, if anyone can help me now id be much obliged! thanks. ill be here more often..now that i got my psswd working again. bastids.

Re: ring and pinion (i know i posted this before)

The general rule of thumb for street cars is A4 - 3.73's and M6 - 4.10's.
If you have the optional 3.42's that came in your f-body, then go with the 4.10's because the step to 3.73's from the 3.42's wouldn't be worth it. The only reason to get the 3.73's in my opinion on am M6 car, would be if its a DD and you are worried a lot about mileage. But since you have 2 OD gears, the 4.10's won't kill you that bad.

The only thing is, just a ring and pinion swap won't make that 10 bolt any stronger. Most decide just to pop for a whole new 12 bolt from Strange or Moser. But obviously, that costs a lot more.

You know me, 3.73's all the way.

4.10 (4.11's) to me is a bit extreme for a daily, so why make yourself the extra work

I think 3.73's are a good compromise, but when I get my LS1, the 4.10's are definitely getting the nod.

Re: ring and pinion (i know i posted this before)

gear swap isn't that hard, it's more precision than anything. easier if you drop the whole rear end out.

Re: ring and pinion (i know i posted this before)

thanks geno. so you think i should pull the entire axle out?

ok. so i have a 97SS....but the speed vs. rpm doesnt match up the 97M6 tranny! it matches the 93 tranny a lot better, which makes me question if the fkkers who did my clutch tossed in a new trans/the guy i bought it from tossed in a diff trans ? the rear end gear IS around 3:1, since i did the spnning of the driveshaft test..and the tires did move 1 time per 3~ish revs.

now, do you think its sitll alright to get gears with a 93 trans? the gears are geared differently, although the 6th gear is still the same at .5

1,2,3,4,5 is all higher ratio (more accel, less speed) so im kinda (WTF?!) about the whole thing..

does this also mean a 93 camaro stock M6 would kick a 95 camaro M6's ass? (higher transmission ratio, more accel...)
