Factory 16" tires?

I have 16" wheels on my Grand Am, with 205/55/16 tires and they look too small for the opening. I will be needing tires very soon, and want to go with some that look like the right size. I have seen 225/55/16 on an Olds Alero that looked closer to the right size, but even those looked a bit small. What does the owners manual say for tire size? My car didn't come with one. Also, any recomendations for tires? I want something with good wet and dry traction, tread that can handle mud and deep snow, and good treadwear. Does such a thing exist?

Re: Factory 16" tires?

Your tire/rim size should be marked on the drivers door sticker. 225/50/16 will work fine, thats what I had on my 96 & 98 GA's.

The www.tirerack.com has all sorts of tires, for all conditions.
I've been running Good Year Assureance(w/80k mile warranty) they seem to handle snow/ice/rain/dry very well.

I'm sure there's a sticker there, but if so, it's covered in paint... the car was wrecked at some point and re-painted... why they don't mask off the important stickers confuses me a bit.

Are your Assurances the "TripleTred" or "ComforTred"? (directional or non-directional) Have you used them in mud or sand? I won't be offroading in this car, but I do occasionally take Level "B" roads and often times wind up in the middle of nowhere for various get-togethers with friends. They don't look like they'd be very good in either... I do have a 4x4 truck, I just hate paying for gas at 10 MPG.

Re: Factory 16" tires?

Depends on what year your car is. My 95 stock had the 205-55-16 on it, anything bigger I ran into rubbing issues when turning in a parking lot. As for a good all weather tire, keep in mind this is a performance size so you are going to compromise snow and mud traction a little bit. I ran the bfgoodrich touring t/a v rated and it did ok in the snow, but nothing beat snow tires.

Re: Factory 16" tires?

It's a '98, sorry I forgot that... Rubing on the fender or something on the inside? I parked it a couple days ago with the wheels turned all the way and noticed it comes 1/2 - 1" from rubbing on the fender, so with the 225/50/16 I think I should be ok there. I'll jack it up one of these days and look underneath to see what kind of space I have there. Up on the hoist there's tons of space, but that doesn't mean anything.

Re: Factory 16" tires?

I ran into trouble with the wider tire hitting the plastic inner fender towards the rear of the fender. Simple enough to fix, heat it with a hair dryer and reshape it a bit.

I recently purchased a car without doing the autocheck and carfax which could have been a major mistake. I am only 16 years old and I don't have a credit card so I was unable to do the check. I know this may be asking a lot, but can someone please run a check on my vehicle.

Re: Factory 16" tires?

Please read the "community guidlines" regarding the hi-jacking of threads

From the carfax website:

This 30 day Unlimited CARFAX Reports Plan is valid for 30 days from the date the first report is run, and is intended for my personal use only. Commercial use, resale and redistribution of CARFAX Reports is strictly prohibited.

You already bought the car... knowing it's a lemon won't help now...

Re: Factory 16" tires?

Yeah youngjohn10, please dont be highjackin the threads !!

It is not "illegal" per say to offer free carfax reports, thiers been several people on AF that paid for thier subscriptions and offered to check others vehicles.
I personaly wouldnt bother with it anyways as most troubles/problems never get reported so it doesnt show up on CF.
Plus we now have your VIN#.... boy what we could do with your personal info.

Re: Factory 16" tires?

That's assuming there has been no issues with the locks over the years. I had bought my grand am as 2nd owner after a repo. First thing that was done was the locks and the remote were changed.

Bridgestone Potenzas are junk, get continental brand tires. I used the G009's and was less than impressed. Just my $.2
