My grand am 2.4 l dohc runs for 3-5 seconds and shuts off if you try to restart without shutting off key and restarting it won't turn over again just cranks. Have had battery and alternator tested and replaced all relays and fuses also changed ignition module and ignition switch in column since it was recalled and i was never notified..... right before it happened the gauges went nutso and all the idiot lights came on. I got it home shut it off and ran it back to the store came home shut it off and thats when it happened.... Can some one help me please before i burn it with me in it lol....

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
if it cranks then its turning over, you mean it just wont start again ?
Hav you checked your fuel pressure or replaced your fuel filter recently ? Is it getting good spark from the coils ? When you replaced the ignition switch, did you so a relearn procedure afterwards ?

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
you dont happen to have an amp hooked up do you, i had my power wire burn and grounded itself out, and all the gauges went nutts and stalled. if not i would check the wiring at the starter, alternater and battery

I have replaced the whole ignition plate on top the motor piece by piece and as far as the fuel filter no i haven't but that is a good idea thanks it does however seem to have good fuel pressure and the pump runs strong. and for the other post no amp just factory everything in that field...and how do you do a relearn procedure???????????????

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
Check to see if you have a trouble code in the ECM/PCM..you didnt mention checking that...those symptoms might signal a computer/ ECM failure too...if it is, I would go to the junkyard and get one...let us know what the problem was...hope u fix it!

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
I have never seen a car that had to be running to check codes, but yes, any OBD-II scan tool/code reader should work.

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
Car still not running found a blown pcm fuse but that didn't solve the problem

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
If the pcm fuse was blown, then something had to short out to blow it. These are never fun....
Did it blow the fuse after you replaced it and tried restarting it ? Did you ever pull those trouble codes ?

Haven't got to pull trouble codes yet but have replaced fuel rail and pressure regulator. because when i dump gas into throttle body it runs until gas runs out.....
Could it stilll be the fuel pump even though pump runs could it be that there is not enough prssure comming from fuel pump to keep car running? |

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
Sound like somethign in the fuel system not working.
Check your fuel pressure and you could try replacing your fuel filter if it hasnt been recently. If its clogged you wont get fuel. Good Luck

Re: 96 grand am wont stay running
I am having the same problem you are having. I tested the fuel pressure and it seemed fine to me. Pressure was above 40 even when my car stalled
. then the pressure dropped after the car stalled but my guage leaked alittle bit. How do i know if the fuel injectors are pulsing? I have noid lights but i cannot get to the injector plug. Please let me know if you find any soulutions. |
