Steering Column related to stalling?
Hi, got a question about my 1997 Supercharged Buick Riviera. First a little history. The day after I bought it, I was trying to lift myself up off the seat while holding on to the steering wheel and snapped it. So the steering wheel had no stabilization, lifted and moved all over freely. Didn't have the money to fix it so I drove it like that for a while. So later on my water pump went out and I took to my "mechanic" friend who replaced the water pump and noticed the obvious steering column problem. He tore the dash out and did something in an attempt to temp. fix the problem, but doesn't. The next day the car dies in mid-drive, restarts 20-30 minutes later. Drove it for a few days, happened again. Nothing for like a week or two then does it again. Eventually reoccurres more frequently. to the point where I can only drive it for 20-30 minutes before it dies and requires me to wait 20-30 minutes before it restarts. Never has an initial starting problem. Had the fuel pump and filter replaced--$700 down the drain. Took it to a friend of a friend who is a mechanic at a used auto dealer. He ran a diagnostic test and came up with nothing. He pulled the dash away from the steering column and said that is was a mess and insists that its related to the vehicle anti-theft protection and wants to replace the entire column. He said its broke in a place that can't be justed pinned back together. He isn't charging me for labor so I don't think he is bending me over. Do you think his theory could be right? Thanks for any info you can provide!!
