2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
my 2001 cavalier overheats only when it idles, overheats in 3 to 5 minutes & the ac blows hot. As soon as you get moving again the car runs at normal temp and the ac blows ice cold. We changed the thermostat, coolant and belts, i'm not loosing any coolant. Looks like the fans are not coming on, I can not find a location for a fan relay switch, thought maybe we should change that before changing out the fans..Is there a relay switch? any one have any other ideas?

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
Look in underhood fuse/relay center- pull fan relay-- "jumper" the relay and see if fan comes on- if not- then pull fan connector at fan- jumper it there- if fan is still inop- you need a new fan motor

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
Or you could just rob the relay from another location, like the fog light relay. If you are running the ac then the fan should automatically come on. so if you swap relays and the fan still doesn't run then you have a bad fan or bad wiring, chaeck for power at the fan connector.

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
your a/c is working like its supposed to, when it senses no air flow going through the condenser it quits working, thats what is happening in your case, now you just need to find out why there is no air flow, obviously you know the fan isnt kicking on and just need to fix that,
yes there is a relay, when i had your IDENTICAL problem it ended up being a $4 fuse that had blown, the one under the hood for the radiator fan, turns out it blew when i went through some pretty deep water a few nights before, i also had a check engine light with that problem

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
A four legged relay has 2 legs for the coil and 2 legs for the "switch" - so you merely connect the two sockets that are the "switch" that the relay plugs into usually with a paper clip- a bosch style relay uses "87" and "30" as the leg identifiers for the switch- or you can meter your relay socket- there will be two 12 volt battery hots- the one is for the coil the other is the feed for the compressor- the feed for the compressor needs to be "jumpered" to the socket that leads to the compressor....

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
Don't EVER jump the fan connector!!! The condenser CANNOT "sense" ANYTHING. Read a few books before posting crap that will cost people money.......dumbass.

Re: 2001 Cavalier is there a Fan Relay switch?
Again, never try zapping power to anything as you could be "zapping" your ECM.
As Makanamail said, the condenser cannot sense anything! The ac clutch cycling switch/pressure switch turns the clutch on and off via the ECM. |
