yeah, you were right...

my previous post about what i thought was 'lifter tick' was wrong. i got a response that it was a spun bearing. i called my friend to tow it to a garage, but he told me to drive it to the park at the end of my street. didn't make it that far. somthing blew, smoke poured and now my poor car sits in a pool of its own oil. ive owned the car since tuesday of last week, a total of 6 days. needless to say that as a teenager i do not have the money to fix (or replace) my engine. i must now sell my car, and i am taking the best offer. i would rather sell her to someone that i know is going to fix it and not just part out or destroy her. please message me if you live near ft. lauderdale, FL.

a few details on the car:
-1991 SL
-116,000 miles
-nice 17 inch rims (not crazy chrome ones, tasteful)
-brand new tires
-automatic, but even though the autos i heard were problematic, mine was fine and shifted really nice
-blue/green in color with a black interior

send me a message with your e-mail and i will send you a few pictures. the body is flawless, with a few very small dents and she never had any body work done. the pictures don't really do it justice. the interior is perfect with a small tear in the drivers seat about the size of a dime. everything electrical works and works well. i did NOT cause this problem, i actually drove it pretty slow mostly because i didn't want anything to happen to it (so much for that huh?) please help me find a good home and get her back on the street!

Wait...I'm no guru on cars, but Isn't a spun bearing something that has to do with a turbo? like the ball bearings in a turbo? If so, then even if that's what's wrong with the vr4 in the video, YOU don't have turbos. Of course, if my understanding of a "spun bearing" is wrong, disregard this post.

edit-Ok going back and reading your post, if something blew and your car is draining oil fast then it must be more serious than I thought. I was just trying to be optimistic

Sorry about your car though dude.

a spun bearing is in regards to the U-shaped metal rings that surround the crankshaft in the bottom end of the engine block. They're a buffer between the crank, and the block to allow it to rotate. When they "spin", they shift out of place and overlap, causing the crank to become off center and cause a "knocking" noise. If you continue to drive with it like this (as the original poster did), it will cause enough vibration, etc. to throw a connecting rod (that connects the crankshaft to the piston) threw the block, or the oil pan... which it sounds like this guy's car did.

This is usually due to neglect over time, abuse, and/or a number of other factors. In his case, it sounds like the previous owner didn't take very good care of the car, and this guy got stuck with the end result

Re: yeah, you were right...

Haha its not talking about the turbo spun barring is talking about the barings around the crankshaft where it's bolted to the block and around the rods where there bolted to the crankshaft. What makes you think you spun a bearing? what is wronge with the car? where did the oil leak from? how long did you drive it exactly with out oil? does it start still?

It is 100% rod knock. The red car in the video, is actually a guy who was looking into bringing his car to our shop to get it fixed, and buy some lights, etc.

ozzvette - did you do an oil change not long before this happened?

as far as selling it goes, i would post it up for sale in the cars for sale section of 3si. make sure you specify you're not willing to part it out...those guys can be ruthless lol. Also post it in the regional section for your area. Make sure to take some good pics too, since you said the body was in good shape. that should help your cause.

it sucks you didnt really get to enjoy your 3000, but good luck with the sale man

www.florida3s.com or something like that would be a good place for you to advertise it. I think your profile says FL if I'm not mistaken.

Re: yeah, you were right...

ok an update to answer a few questions...

i had the car for 6 days so i didn't have the oil changed yet...but the pressure was fine it was right in the middle all the time.

i drove the car approx 1/2 mile before it blew. the knocking was really severe at this point.

i was unable to exactly see where the oil was coming from, but it was the bottom end of the block and literally leaked like a garden hose when the tow truck lifted her up.

i think im gonna drop a new engine into it (not BRAND new, but new to me) because the car really is in the best shape ive ever seen the early GTs in. if anyone has some advice as to where to locate an engine (just a base or SL) in south florida, please let me know. my car was seriously one of the best cars i have ever driven and i just fell in love with her. i guess the previous owner didn't care for it and now im going to, provided i can find the cash for a decent engine. Any advice is greatly appreciated, i don't know a whole lot about these cars

I'm glad you're going to fix it, instead of sell it

You probably threw a rod through the pan. That's what generally happens when it just gushes out like that.

www.florida3s.com is THE BEST place to get some local help and advice. They're a great group over there, and will be able to help you locate an engine, and possibly even install it in your car.

Good luck.
