1999 yukon starts, runs for 1 sec. then stalls.

Hi Everyone, I have a 1999 Yukon Denali, 5.3 cl, with about 50k miles on it, eighth letter of vin is "R".

I bought this vehicle used in 2002. I believe the keys are original.

Last year I parked this vehicle for about 3 months. When I got back and tried to start it, I found the battery was completely drained. I installed a new battery and tried to start it, but it would crank up run for about 1 to 2 seconds and then die. I checked the fuel and it is topped off. The security light comes on when the key is turned to the on position, stays on for 5 seconds and then goes off. When I start it the security light flashes about 4 or 5 times during the 1 to 2 seconds that it runs, then the engine shuts down and the security light goes off.

I checked the BBDII codes and there was no codes listed.

When I first bought this truck, it did the same thing, except eventually it would start. I took it to the dealer and they fixed the ground wire to the anti theft device and that solved the problem.

I don't know that it is the anti theft device or not. I tried to reset it, even though the security light does not flash, by turning it to run for 15 min. then off for 1 min., 3 times, to no avail.

One last thing. I found a sticker under the hood that says this vehicle has a DEI remote start installed. I have looked for the module but have not found it. The used car dealer or previous owner may have removed it. I don't know.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

check wiring on the ignition switch. might be a broken wire for the passlock2 if ever they took out the rmote starter modules.

Most used car dealers dont really remove the remote start they just cut the wires and tuck and hide them.
Check your fuel pressure make sure its correct.

I also have a 99 Yukon and I'm having the same problem. Everything I've been seeing keeps refering back to the Passlock System. Tring to find out how to by-pass this system without having to replace the ignition lock cylinder because of a warn cylinder or key.

Really should start new thread based on the age of this one, but for now does the security lite on the dash stay on when you encounter the problem, if not it is usually not a passlock problem.

Re: 1999 yukon starts, runs for 1 sec. then stalls.

Security light does stay on when the problem occures. Tried leaving the key in the on position for 10-15 mins. for security light to flash but never does. After leaveing it off over night I try another start the security light goes out and I get a start. Runs like nothing was ever wrong till the next time I try. Security light will not go out and no start. All I've talked to say to replace the ignition switch because of a faulty PassLock in the switch. Dealer cost is 203.00 and discount auto parts is 111.00. Theres got to some means of by-passing this system without complete steering colum dissasembly?

I was dealing with the same problem after replacing my steering column because my shifter broke, it was the pass lock and the formula if the security light stays on is turn the motor over but dont allow to start and let it sit for ten minutes, if the security light goes off the turn the ignition off for ten seconds, repeat 3 times and it should clear the code, FYI you could get a ignition switch at a junk yard for around 50 bucks. if you do go get one do the process explained above

Re: 1999 yukon starts, runs for 1 sec. then stalls.

You can take the shroud off around the column. Up next to the key switch you'll see a tiny plug with 3 wires. It should be orange-black(ground), yellow(resistance) and a white(don't worry about this one). If at the moment you can get the truck to start with out the light on, start it and then cut the yellow wire. The light should come on. Place a DVM between the cut yellow wire (switch side) and the ground wire. Read the ohms that is being sent. Go to Radio Shack and buy enough resistors to match that value. If you can't get it exactly right it is always better to be slightly higher than lower (ie if you read 1488ohms but you can either get 1460 or 1500 go for the 1500) Place the resistor on the ground wired and the other end to the OTHER cut end of the yellow resistance wire(going towards BCM)

If the light is constantly on when you go to do this trick and won't start, just pick out a resistance value then get a battery charger. Crank the truck if it doesn't start, leave the ignition on until the light goes solid. Crank it again. If it doesn't start, do this again. It may take up to an hour to get it done but usually it takes about 20 minutes.
