v10 sputters to life

V10 sputters to life
I have a 01 2500 v10. Recently when I start the truck it sputters and barely starts. It used to roar to life. The other day when I tried to back up after just starting it, it stalled and I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it alive. I can’t figure it out. I recently replace the thermostat but that shouldn’t have an affect on it. After reading a previous thread I replaced the battery because I knew it was leaking but this did not help. Air filter is fine I sprayed throttle body cleaner in to the intake. I also put fuel system cleaner in the tank. I also read about the IAC sensor on the throttle body I think I might check this next. I did put +2s spark plugs in it but it has run fine since until now. I read that these might not be a good idea for the v10. Might try to put some cheep ones in to see if that makes a difference. Oh yah no check engine light. That would make it a lot easer if it would come on.

Re: v10 sputters to life

the +2 plugs should go, they're never a good idea. It's possible the engine has been building up carbon or other crap inside for a while if the combustion isn't right.
check the resistance on your plug wires with a multimeter. How old are the wires?

might the problem just be because its cold out?

Re: v10 sputters to life

Im not sure how old the wires are. I haven’t had the truck long. What should the resistance be? I thought about replacing them but 10 wires isn’t cheep. If I do replace them should I go with 8MM?
Why are the +2 so bad? I guess that was an expensive mistake. $40
Its always cold here I live in Maine.

Re: v10 sputters to life

Not exactly sure what they should be on yours, but my 04 manual says resistance should be below 10kohms. I assume its similar for you.
I wouldn't bother wasting money with more expensive wires, but don't get the cheapest things you find either. try sparkplugs.com the only wires they got for your truck are denso for $46, and denso is some good quality stuff (toyota OEM).

+2 just doesn't make sense to me. is the point supposed to be that the electricity jumps to both electrodes so you have two sparks to start the flame?
well electricity goes through the path of least resistance, so unless both electrodes are gapped perfectly evenly (and stay that way after eroding) the spark is only going to go to one side. Then when that side wears away its going to go to the other side, and so on. Even if it does split to both sides (which is rare), you end up with a weaker spark. +4 are even worse, I've heard nothing but bad things about them. +2 were OEM on my old toyota, but i put in platinum singles. Found out later that yota stopped recommending +2, and my NGK platinum singles never skipped a beat.

hope i helped

Re: v10 sputters to life

Update
Replaced the IAC she starts great now. I also cleaned the throttle body because I had to remove it when I changed the valve. FYI contrary to what some think (my local dodge dealership ) the throttle body on a V10 takes a different gasket then a 360/318 throttle body.
