tiny inconvenience

i have an older KDC-222 head that's giving me an intermittent problem.
it seems like when i'm driving for awhile listening to the radio loud, it turns itself down for a moment and then comes back to normal volume.
while it's doing this the sub still bangs out like nothing's wrong.

i've never managed to have a tester handy while drving on the freeway when it happens, so i'm looking for suggestions.

i realize the most obvious one is 'replace that head unit' but i'd like not to throw parts at it until it's figured out. a super nice one's going in at rebuild time, but that time is not right now.

unless this is the little thing that's gonna set the whole project in motion.
wtv.

any advice is appreciated.

:edit:
and why the HELL is there a huge ad INSIDE of the thread box?
registered people get these?

Re: tiny inconvenience

it's because you are running your normal 4 speakers off the headunit's amp and the sub off of a seperate amp. When the amp in the headunit overheats, it's cutting the power u ntil it cools down.

As for ads .... gotta pay for the site somehow

Re: tiny inconvenience

the amp built into the headunit is not particularly powerful, a seperate 4 channel amp of around 50-60 watts/ch RMS will have lots more power and headroom.
