Re: just bought mr2 questions

If you were looking for a performance car, then it probably was a better choice as for mpg, it all depends on how you drive it. If you are gentle on the throttle and don't boost around, you can get upwards of 30mpg. In my mk1.5 if I didn't boost I was in the high 30's and I've known several people to get mid-high 30's in mk2 turbos. In my last mk2 turbo it averaged in the low to mid 20's though, and that's with the occasional heavy foot. The blow off valve might hurt your mileage and performance some, but the only real alternative is to find a stock bpv to replace it.

the car is gearing limited to ~152mph on stock diameter tires.

Re: just bought mr2 questions

I have a modded honda and a MR2 turbo actually, lol.

As for JDM motor and tranny, do you have a Gen 3 JDM motor or Gen 2? I'm guessing Gen 3 since you have an LSD tranny. If it's Gen 3, you won't have the issues a Gen 2 has with a BOV vented to the atmosphere, since they use a MAP sensor and not an AFM.

Also, a Gen 3 puts down about 240 @ the crank stock.

I know on my Gen 2 MR2 Turbo, I get about 24mpg mixed with medium driving. Not boosting all the time, but I do have fun with it.

Changing the Oil and Filter every 3K is always a good idea.

The modded Honda would have likely netted you a little better MPG. They are much easier to work on too. I do love my MR2 and despite it being a money pit (since it needed serious TLC when I bought it), I wouldn't trade it. It's fast, fun and the motor is built for boost out of the box. Iron Block closed deck.

That said, a modded turbo'd honda built right can be very fast. If I was buying a heavily modded car like in your versus thread, I'd want to make sure it was built and tuned right.

Overall, as long as the MR2 you got was in decent shape, I'd say it wasn't a bad purchase. They cost a lot of money to work on though if you can't do it yourself. If the modded Integra was in good shape and built right, that could have been a fun car too, and is a dang site easier to work on, for you or the mechanic. I guess it's just preference. However, owning both cars and loving them both...I will say...even a nice looking stock MR2 gets looks. That's something you won't get with a stock looking Honda/Acura. Then again..I do love my Honda and will never get rid of it. I'm torn, I guess it's just personal preference.

Another thing to consider when asking if you feel you should have got the Acura...an Acura Integra is a lot higher theft target than an MR2. The Integra in your other thread would be more of a theft target than the MR2. That's actually a reason I bought an MR2. I considered buying another Honda, due to the ease of working on them and I can build one in my sleep...but the high theft rate made me stay away from getting a 2nd one.
