Replacing cylinder head gaskets,on 3.1. I have used plastic scrapers, aerosol gasket remover, brake cleaner, and acetone. No grease, oil, or dirt left on surface. It is not super shiney as when head is milled. still see some blackness imbeded in metal. No ridges, or high spots. Is this normal? And o.k. to install gaskets? This seems dumb question, but here on forums i see all the time where, everyone says clean, clean, clean!! Thank You all.
GOT IT ! There will be discoloration of the metal a little. Unless you are machining the head. So, looks like i got it VERY clean, and can go ahead and install it. Thanks guys.

Re: Gasket Surface How clean Is Clean?
If there are no high spots and all the grease and oil is removed you are clean enough. The major issue is to make sure that there are no parts of the old gasket material remaining and that the surface is clean. This goes for both the deck and the head. This applies to all other gasket surfaces as well.
