another transmission thread
Hi,
I have a 2000 GP GT with 109k miles on it. I notice that when accelerating in gear (not pressing hard enough for a downshift) that it surges back and forth, and the tach does the same. It has done it in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear. I believe the plugs and wires are original, but think this may be a TCC going bad? The previous owner said he had changed the fluid himself 30k miles ago, but the fluid looked yellowish/clear when i got the car, no burn smell. I got some fluid to top it off, and its very red and smells very bad. Once i put in half a quart, the fluid is red all the time now. Would the transmission run on motor oil if thats what was put in it? I'm just trying to narrow down the possibilities here, and plan on changing the fluid/filter myself once it warms up. Let me know what you think, thanks! |

Re: another transmission thread
You're getting what is called "Fishbite" or "Chuggle" when the TCC lock and unlocks like that. It could be a secondary ignition issue or TCC related. Dextron-III which is the proper ATF is red and after a while it smells bad but it doesn't mean it is bad. The yellowish/clear is not correct but could be synthetic ATF.

Re: another transmission thread
Its either the transmission or the TPS i think. It doesn't do it all the time, and it shifts really nice into all the gears. If it were the TCC, wouldn't it only do it in 4th gear? Does the converter lock in 2nd and 3rd, cause it does it in those gears too, but not all the time. I think i'll try and put a meter on the TPS first.

Re: another transmission thread
Sounds more like a secondary ignition problem me. Along the line of spark plugs, ignition wires or coil packs.
Although the TPS could be suspect replacement of it very seldom if ever cures the problem contrary to what GM has out out in the applicable TSB. A bad or out of performance/range TPS normally gives off a SES/CEL light and stores a TPS related DTC.

Re: another transmission thread
Bad plug wires caused a similar condition in mine. I'd replace them and the plugs first.

Re: another transmission thread
I agree with Bnaylor and wlkjr. Whenever a problem arises, replace the regular maintenance parts that are questionable first. This way, your not throwing money away on expensive parts that may not be an issue. Oem wires have the cylinder numbers on them (replacement sets do not), so that would be an easy way to determine if the wires are original. Replace the plugs, wires, PCV and fuel filter, inspect the air filter as well, and then get back with us if the problem persists.
