Auto Tranny acting weird

whats up guys

the other day i was driving my car and i started to come to a stop and the rpms dropped like it was going to stall out for a second then jumped back to normal. then the next light i got to had the opposite effect with the rpms jumping up to around 2k and dropping back to normal idle rpm. followed by a CEL. took it to the mechanic, he scanned the code, fixed a solonoid related to the tranny (all i got out of my dad) and sent me on my way. 2 hours later the rpms started acting funny again so i took it back, he adjusted the speed input sensor and reset the computer (unhooked battery). got it back, drove it 15 miles and now its worse than when i started. stopped at a light and rpms dropped again. light turned green and i gave it somewhere between a half and a quarter throttle, nothing heavy, and it sputtered a bit and then acted like i had put it in nutral (gas with no go what so ever). a few seconds later i heard the tranny whine as it goes into gear and it drove normal for a mile or so then started hesitating again. took it back to the mech and he said he couldnt get it to do it and doesnt think anything is wrong.

i want to say throttle position sensor? but im not sure...and that would throw a CEL of its own would it not? torque converter? at this point i dont know and am just hopping for another CEL to make it a bit easier to find.

thanks for the help

Re: Auto Tranny acting weird

I'm not familiar with auto trannys on these cars, but yes the TPS throws it own CEL but it wouldn't be causing issues like that. And you said the tranny whined, so I think it's something there.

It's weird that rpms went up in gear and didn't move. Again, not sure on autos so can't help there. Sounds like a tranny issue though. Is reverse still working good?

Re: Auto Tranny acting weird

when i said the tranny whined i meant the sound all auto trannys make when they change gears. nothing abnormal sound wise.

and i havnt had any problems out of reverse. i just drove her for about 20 minutes and didnt have anything weird happen. i dont know what the deal is.

Ah I thought you meant it sounded weird when it did it. My bad. And she shifts fine when shifting and when you go through any gears?

Re: Auto Tranny acting weird

seems to usually always be first (slowing down to a stop, or starting out). may have hesitated in second once but i dont remember. i drove her all day and she didnt do anything weird.

going to keep an eye on her. hopefully its fine. and hopefully ill be swapping in a 5 speed in may or june.

Re: Auto Tranny acting weird

ok the latest problem...

was driving home after driving her all day friday and today then the CEL kicked back on...and the tranny wouldnt gear down when i gave it gas/went up a hill. it finally decided to drop to 3rd and slamed into that gear. stayed there the rest of the way home (about a mile and a half). stopped in the drive way, put it in reverse and it slammed into gear. put it back in drive and it slammed back into that gear. parked her and going to take her back to the mechanics. anybody have any ideas??

Re: Auto Tranny acting weird

ok so update...for anybody thats keeping track or has a simalar problem in the future

aparently...my car was in limp mode after the solinoid went out (cel) and thats why it wasnt shifting. i was unaware auto trannys did this but i guess it makes since. my mechanic said he's done all he can to it and if this doesnt fix it (the solinoid) i have to take it to a tranny shop.

if it comes down to a few hundred dollars for a rebuild/new tranny im just going to say fuck it and go without a car for a month and a half til i have the cash to swap in a 5 speed.

considered just getting a torque converter but the auto tranny blows as far as putting power to the wheels so fuck it.
