Re: Cancel service engine soon light
How do you turn off the check engine light on a 88 Buick LeSabre? Already tried disconnecting the battery and don't wanna take the bulb out or the fuse. What else is there to do besides taking it to the mechanic?

Re: 1988 LeSabre- Cancel service engine light
The only way to cancel the service engine soon light is to fix the problem sensed by the electronic control module by first pulling the codes from the diagnostic control module. After the problem is fixed you remove the negative battery cable and wait a few minutes before reconnecting it and the light will be gone. If a problem still exists in the ECM system the light will either still be on or will reilluminate when the effected sensor is triggered. Sometimes fixing one problem will clear many codes or conversely sometimes it is neccesary to replace more than one control to clear just one code. The other and much more unlikely scenario is that an open circuit exists somewhere in the wiring between the ECM and the SES light. Inspect the wiring and harnesses/plugs between them. As a general rule as well when I replace emission related parts I check the operation of the part where possible so I am not replacing a working part while the problem is an underlying electrical wiring issue between the sensor/part and the ECM.
