98 tc rear end sag

Replacing rear springs seems to be one of the better options for the sagging problem according to previous post. What do you suggest as far as crown vic or what. This way is less expensive and rides almost as well I read on other answers. Fantastic car with 80k miles. Thanks for your help.

Reading back on previous posts, coils were used where folks don't care for their air ride. Scared, Lazy, Cheap, Paranoid... we have them all here.

As for "better option..." only you can decide that, it's not a better option for me. Many folks buy a used TC that was converted to coils, then spend whatever is required to restore the air ride.

In the TC it's only two springs and a compressor.. the system lasts a long time if maintained.
Personally, I use mine to keep the rear end level when I load it full of in-laws and luggage.

When my springs pop, I'll just put new ones.. I'm good for another 10 years.

The mistake folks make with these is when the springs leak, then don't replace them. They leak, and leak.. and the poor compressor tries to compensate.. it's not designed for that kind of duty cycle and soon fries too. Now you have a set of leaky springs AND a blown compressor. You add those up.. and say "damn.. coils are way cheaper than this air shit" !!! and at that point, they are.

Yes, Crown Vic fits (I'm told). New coil kits are everywhere though.

I replaced my air springs with coil springs on my 1990 TC. I really did not notice any difference in the ride, it was still VERY smooth in town or on long trips. But steven has a VERY good point that coils will not auto adjust when you have a back seat full of inlaws and a trunk full of luggage. I have bought both air & coil springs from Strut Masters and have allways been pleased with there quality & price. Just my .

I had a 1995 Continental which is a little different because it has air bags on all four wheels. Once I converted I was extremely mad, and which I would have paid the extra dollars to repair my air ride. Once you put people into the rear seat, your rear end will sag all over with coils. Strutmasters is an excellent place to get replace airbags, or the conversion kit. They will help you throughout the process of installing whatever you buy from them. They are available until 10pm, eastern standard time.

If your car only has 80,000 miles on it I would fix the air suspension.
I put crown vic coils in my town car. They were from a police package and those are supposed to be a little more heavy duty. It does not sag with a full load of people. It actually rides better loaded. Mine had a bad compressor and Im sure there was a leak somewhere that caused it to burn out in one years time. It was replaced along with one air bag and whatever else that year before at a total cost of $1200. I put in coil springs from the junk yard and new shocks and dampers for a total cost of $58. Now it is fixed permanently! The car has 172,000 miles on it so I wasnt going to dump much money into what is a temporary car with that many miles.
