installing aftermarket tach 1984 V8

I want to install an aftermarket tach for my 1984 Chevy truck (5.0 V8). Where does the tach feed wire go? I am reading the instruction manual for the install, but it just says to check your trucks service manual (which I don't have).

Thanks.

Re: installing aftermarket tach 1984 V8

I could be wrong, but when I put a aftermarket tach on my older 454 there was a place by the distributor cap on the drivers side, that is black and says Tach on it, I did put it in there and it worked. I hope this helped...

if there is no tach lead, i beleive you can just put it on the negatice terminal of your ignition coil.

Re: installing aftermarket tach 1984 V8

Working on it today, the ignition coil is integrated into the distributor itself.

I was looking at it, and there is no external coil, and if there is any writing on it to tell which is the tach wire, I can't make any of it out.

There is a wire that come from inside the rotor and plugs into the cap. I believe there is 2 open slots next to it. Find a female conector that will match up to male end if your wire coming from your tach doesnt already have one and just plug into one of them.
