'96 GMC 3500HD fuel gauge

Hello. My fuel gauge has stopped working on my truck. Sending unit is good, i get same values at the harness to the gauge. Dealer says send it in and get it rebuilt--300 to 400 $!! Is there another way? This truck has a manual trans, 454. 8th digit J.
