MMA Anyone?

Well, seeing that we have a thread for gamers, I was also curious to know if there are any of you who are truly intrigued by Mixed Martial Arts.

I've been a huge fan since back in the days of UFC 1. Even in 1997, IFC was hosted here on my reservation of Akwesasne, and my uncle actually participated in one event. Been trying my best not to miss any major events that come up. It's pretty cool to see athletes compete in a manner unlike boxing which I feel has no real potential as a sport anymore due to the fact that "MMA" is taking up the glory.

Apart from that, I've been into Martial Arts, from TKD to Wrestling to Boxing. Lately I've been looking at what it would take to step in the ring. Then I found out my cousin was, in fact, training with non other than George St. Pierre. He gave me the scoop, what it takes, and what you can expect each day.

But, this thread is also to discuss fighters, who roots for who, and things of that nature. Well, hopefully this thread picks up.

Re: MMA Anyone?

I've definitely taken a liking to MMA in the past few years, probably because a few of my friends do it. We get most UFC fights and I've been watching Pride videos on Youtube. Always fun to see guys progress. I've been considering starting Muay Thai training this summer, but we'll see where that goes.

Re: MMA Anyone?

Hmm, I'm not really into it since most of the time it just turns into a grappling match.

Go back and watch the Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva fight from a few months back. They stood there and punched each other for 15 minutes. That was a fun one.

Re: MMA Anyone?

Knockout punches and kicks are a great way to end a fight, but the grappling part of the match is actually the more interesting part to watch. The moves become much more technical. To the untrained eye it looks like they are just wrestling like two siblings fighting over a toy - but if you are familiar with chokes and locks and arm bars you can see what tactics they are trying to execute or defend against, and it becomes more than just two guys rolling around on the ground. Some guys are geniuses on the ground and they are amazing to watch. BJ Penn and Anderson Silva are good examples - they are so limber they can hook a leg even in full guard.

Good point. Both those guys are nasty on the ground. Can also knock a guy out with one hit, but Penn and Silva are two of the best pound-for-pound fighters there are.

LeVar Burton is the original cage fighter.

None can withstand his reading rainbow wrath.

My idea of a good staged hand to hand fight involved |\-> High punch.

That was definitely a good fight to watch. The one fight that still stays in my mind is Roger Huerta vs Leonard Garcia. It was definitely more action packed that the Liddell Silva fight.

Been going on Sherdog.com a lot lately, and checking back with UFC's website. Anderson Silva made a huge point by shutting down Henderson this past month as well. He is honestly one of the most exciting fighters I have seen.

It was really a shame when Pride FC was sold to the UFC. I enjoyed watching both events on PPV. I'd like to see more Pride fighters jump to the UFC to make it more exciting. Mostly I would enjoy to see Takanori Gomi come into the lightweight division and challenge Penn again. The lightweight division has been the most exciting to watch too.

Re: MMA Anyone?

i used to try and do it when i was a kid. we shared the same facility as Adrian Serrano. But i did judo instead, as my parents wouldnt have me going to school with scars on my face. they train not too far from me still. did judo with wahadachi judo club. adrian would join our workouts sometimes. he is more of a summision guy.

now to watch it, i really dont. dont have time for it. its all work, and school.
