22" rims rubbing back struts

i have a 2005 impala and i tried to put some 22" rims on. The rims fit perfectly in the front but in the back they are rubbing the struts. I went to a local and well known rim shop and the guy suggested that i hammer the struts until they nolonger rub against the tires. He also said that he has done this act for all of the impalas and that it is the only way that 22" rims will fit. is this correct to do, or even safe????????????
